Prime Minister The Hon. Dr. Terrence Drew said his newly formed Labour Government will not rush in and treat people with disrespect and unfairly.
Drew made the remark on Freedom Radio last Friday, while commenting on the criticism that the Government was taking to long to remove political appointees, and also attacks from PLP that people are being victimized.
“We are doing things prudently,” Drew said, pointing out that there is a process in place to investigate allegations of wrong doing, and then take action with supporting evidence.
Drew recalled on the first day of entering Government Headquarters as Prime Minister, he had instructed his supporters to wait outside.
“There was no ran sacking of government offices. Our supporters fully understood that this is a new way of doing things, and did not rush into Government Headquarters to disrespect anyone. I want to really applaud them for acting that way,” the Prime Minister said.
Drew pointed out that St. Kitts-Nevis was a democratic country.
“This was not a military take over,” Drew said. “I remember in 2015 people going up in hard hats and ran sacked people’s offices. Our government will not be like that.”
The Prime Minister pointed out that a process is indeed in place, and in cases where evidence of significant wrong doing is revealed, “then we will take the necessary measures to protect the Country,” Drew said.
The Prime Minister went on to point out that already unsavory deeds of the previous administration have been uncovered.
“You wonder if this was a government or if this was a family business running like a mafia,” Drew said. “When you look at what we are finding, we certainly could not continue another five years like this. Believe me it is that bad.”
“But we are committed to cleaning up the government,” Drew said. “The former administration had people using the government as their cash cow. People were using the treasury as personal bank account. Regulations and rules were not being followed, just ruling as they see fit.”
