26-year-old Jalicia Benjamin, of Jalicia’s Hairstyles, was awarded the YouTube Silver Plaque for 100,000 subscribers on her YouTube page (she’s up to 110000 now).
She is the only person from St Kitts-Nevis who has reach such achievement in social media dominance. She has videos with millions of views.
Jalicia is a well-known local braider, and calls herself a ‘plaitologist’. She was inspired by her mom Malicia Benjamin, and has been in the business for almost 30 years having started at the age of 15 in her home community of Trafalgar village.
Benjamin (Jalicia) started braiding at the age of four “just learning, teaching and helping and now I’m here.”
As a young girl, “what really caught my attention first was just to see my mom doing hair for so many hours… and that just pushed me to elevate not just hair but anything at all.”
